The club was founded in 1895 by Dave Taylor and Arnold Gills, and played on an amateur basis. The club was first led into major victories during 1961 when Ron Greenwood was appointed team leader. The club's original crest had two hammers crossed with a castle later added, which was reportedly the "Boleyn Castle" after Anne Boleyn, Henry VIII's second wife and queen. The castle was reportedly the place where Henry courted Anne but there are no facts that actually support that theory. After a recent poll in which more than 10,000 participated, it was decided to change the crest once again after 72% supported the change. The hammers were left in the crest and the Boleyn castle dropped. The word "London" was added as well to "establish the club firmly on the international stage".
