Mesut Ozil was born 15 October 1988, and is a German footballer who plays for English club Arsenal and the German national team. As a third generation Turkish-German, Ozil believes that his technique and feeling for the ball is the Turkish part of his game, and the discipline and motivation to win is the German part. He started his career at his hometown club Schalke, in the Bundesliga in 2006, transferred to Werder Bremen in 2008. Following his outstanding performance for Germany at the world cup, Ozil was signed by Real Madrid in August 2010. In 2013 he moved to Arsenal for a fee of £42.5 million, the highest fee ever paid for a German player.

When choosing which team to play for internationally, Ozil was eligible to play for either Germany or Turkey, but chose to play for his country of birth, being called up for the German under-17 team in September 2006. From 2007, he became a member of the German under-21 team, and was selected as man of the match on 29 June 2009, in a 4-0 win over England during the U-21 European Championship final. Ozil debuted for the German senior side during a friendly match against Norway on 11 February 2009, but only scored his first goal for the senior team in his third appearance in a friendly against South Africa. He managed to gain international attention during the 2010 FIFA World Cup and was nominated for the Golden Ball Award, which is awarded to the tournament's best player.
