Copa Del Rey, also known as King's Cup, is one of Spain's most familiar football competitions. It's original name, El Campeonato de Espana - Copa de Su Majestad el Rey de Futbol (English: King's Cup), tells of its origin - a celebration of the king's coronation. The Spanish Football Federation which is traditionally in charge of Copa Del Rey, governs it and gets to decide over which venue will host the games. The Federation issues a committee which chooses the stadium in which Copa Del Rey will take place just after two semifinals have been played, which has been the cause of drama and confusion with tensions between Catalans and Basques being a constant issue in Spain. In 1983 the Royal Spanish Football Federation created the Copa De La Reina (English: Queen’s Cup), a female equivalent of Copa Del Rey which functions as a knockout tournament between Spain’s top eight women’s football clubs.

The winning team of Copa Del Rey traditionally heads over to UEFA Europa League and if qualified, goes to UEFA Champions League instead.
